What a troll game is, where the name comes from and the tricks it plays on you. Then seven tips that work on any troll platformer.

A troll game is a video game that plays tricks on you on purpose. It looks normal, then breaks the rules you thought it had: the floor gives way, a coin kills you, the exit runs off. The name comes from internet slang, where a troll is someone who provokes people for a reaction. Here the game is the troll, and your reaction is the point.

Below: what these games do, why the first death matters more than the rest, and seven tips we use ourselves when a level lies to us.

Troll game meaning, in plain words

Most games teach you rules and then test them. A troll game teaches you rules and then breaks them, once, to make you laugh or shout. The best-known form is the troll platformer, where you run and jump through short rooms full of hidden traps.

The idea is old. Syobon Action, a Japanese freeware game from 2007 better known as Cat Mario, used the habits of Super Mario players against them. Recent browser games like Level Devil and our own Level Demon follow the same recipe with shorter rooms and instant restarts.

A troll game is a kind of rage game. We explain the wider family in what is a rage game.

The tricks a troll game plays

These are the traps we see most often, and the ones we use in Level Demon:

A floor that collapses the moment you stand on it.

Spikes that pop up from a floor that looked clean.

An exit door that stands up and runs away, or a fake door that kills you.

Gravity that flips and drops you onto the ceiling.

Saws, cannons and blocks that appear where there was nothing.

The trigger matters as much as the trap. In Level Demon, traps react to where you stand, when you jump, when you stop or how long you wait.

Real gameplay from Level Demon. The ceiling joins in.

7 tips to beat any troll game

1. Assume everything is lying

If a floor looks safe, treat it as a suspect. If the door is close, it is probably about to leave. Walk into every new room expecting a trick. You will be surprised less often, and you will laugh more when you are.

2. Spend your first life on purpose

Your first death in a room is the tutorial. Go in, set the trap off and watch what it does. In most troll platformers, one death shows you the whole trick.

3. Nothing is random

A good troll game is scripted. Level Demon runs on a fixed physics tick of 60 steps per second, so the same moves give the same result on every device. If a plan worked once, it will work again.

4. Slow down near the obvious

Troll levels hide their traps where your eyes are not: just before the exit, on the last safe tile, right after a jump. Stop for half a second before the obvious ending. Many traps fire on movement, so standing still can be the answer.

5. Try the opposite

If jumping kills you, walk. If running kills you, wait. If the door runs right, go left. Troll designers love to reward the move you thought was wrong.

6. Watch your deaths back

After each room, Level Demon shows a replay of all your deaths at once. Patterns jump out: you always die at the same spot, a step too early. Any game with a replay or a ghost can teach you the same way.

7. Take a break after ten deaths

Anger makes your timing worse. Ten deaths in a row in the same spot is a sign to stand up, drink some water and come back. The trap will still be there, and you will see it fresh.

Why the troll game works on us

A troll game is a joke with you as the punchline. It works because the setup is fair: two buttons, a short room, a door. When the trap fires, you know at once what happened and that you could have guessed. That mix of “unfair” and “I should have seen it” is why players restart instead of quitting.

FAQ

Is Level Devil a troll game?

Yes, by the meaning above. It is a troll platformer by Unept, released in 2023 and playable on Poki. Level Demon is a different game by IceGaming Team, not affiliated with Level Devil.

Where can I play a troll game for free?

In a browser. Level Demon is free, needs no download and no account, and has a new daily level every night at 22:00 Paris time. The FAQ lists the controls.

Are troll games hard?

They feel hard for one death per trap. Once you know the trick, most rooms take a few seconds.

Your turn

Try the seven tips on today’s daily demon. It has three rooms, everyone gets the same ones, and each of them lies.

Six games like Level Devil, from free browser troll platformers to cult classics. What each one does, where to play it and who made it.

Looking for games like Level Devil? You want the same joke told a different way: a simple run-and-jump level that looks safe, and a floor, a spike or a door that betrays you the moment you trust it. Here are six games that do that, with what makes each one different and where you can play it.

One of them is ours. Level Demon is made by our team, and we mark it as ours. The other five we did not make, and we have no deal with their developers.

What makes a game like Level Devil

Level Devil was created by Adam Corey, known online as Unept, and released in 2023, according to its page on Poki, where it is one of the most played platform games. You run, you jump, you try to reach a door. The level changes under your feet: floors drop, spikes appear, saws show up.

So the games like Level Devil we picked share three things:

The level is the enemy. There are few or no monsters. The room itself sets the traps.

A death costs seconds, not minutes. You restart at once and try again.

The first death teaches you the trick. The game is about memory and timing, not stats or upgrades.

People also call this genre a troll platformer or a rage platformer.

Six games like Level Devil

1. Level Demon (ours)

Level Demon is the free rage platformer we make. Every level lies, and you get two controls: run and jump. The hero is Short Fuse, a matchstick whose flame grows with every death in the room. Floors drop, spikes pop up, the exit door stands up on tiny legs and runs away, and gravity flips.

Two things set it apart from other games like Level Devil. A new daily level, the daily demon, drops every night at 22:00 Paris time and is the same for every player. After each room, a replay shows all your deaths at once. It runs in a browser on a computer or a phone, with no download and no account. You can play it now.

Real gameplay from Level Demon. The door has seen you.

2. The Unfair Platformer

The Unfair Platformer is a browser game by Eggys Games, playable on CrazyGames. The page describes it as “a funny and unique platformer game with a lot of traps in it”. Controls are the arrow keys or A and D to move, W or up to jump. If you liked the cheap shots of Level Devil, this is the closest of the games like Level Devil on our list.

3. Syobon Action, also called Cat Mario

Syobon Action is a Japanese freeware game from February 2007 and one of the oldest troll platformers people still talk about. It parodies Super Mario Bros. Innocent-looking objects kill you in ways you cannot see coming. Many later games like Level Devil borrow its idea: use the habits a player already has against them. It is a Windows download, not a browser game.

4. Trap Adventure 2

Trap Adventure 2 is a 2D platformer by Hiroyoshi Oshiba, first released for iOS in 2016, which became popular in 2018. Wikipedia describes its levels as full of “endless traps similar to Cat Mario”. Expect long levels with a trap every few steps.

5. I Wanna Be the Guy

I Wanna Be the Guy is a freeware game by Michael “Kayin” O’Reilly, first released in October 2007, with a remastered edition in December 2020. It is far harder than Level Devil. Apples fall upwards, and the game expects pixel-precise jumps on top of the traps. Pick it if you want the troll humour and a much steeper wall.

6. Jump King, for a different kind of rage

Jump King (Nexile, 2019) has no hidden traps. You climb a tall tower, and one bad jump can drop you a long way down. We list it because many players who enjoy games like Level Devil also enjoy the pure frustration of a fall. It is a paid game on PC and consoles.

How to choose your next troll platformer

Each of these games like Level Devil suits a different mood.

You want to play right now, in a browser, for free: Level Demon or The Unfair Platformer.

You want the classic that started a lot of it: Syobon Action.

You want something much harder: I Wanna Be the Guy.

You want rage without tricks: Jump King.

Not sure what counts as a rage game? We wrote a short definition with examples.

FAQ

Is Level Demon the same game as Level Devil?

No. Level Demon is an independent game made by IceGaming Team. It is not affiliated with Level Devil or with other games using similar names. More answers are on our FAQ page.

Are there free games like Level Devil in a browser?

Yes. Level Demon and The Unfair Platformer both run in a web browser for free, with no download.

Which game like Level Devil has a daily level?

Level Demon has a new level every night at 22:00 Paris time, the same for every player. Past days stay playable in the archive.

Our pick

We are biased, so take this with a pinch of salt: if you finished Level Devil and want more, start with today’s daily demon in Level Demon. It takes a few minutes, everyone gets the same rooms, and you can compare your deaths with your friends. Then try the other games like Level Devil on this list and tell us which trap got you the most.

A rage game is a video game built to frustrate you on purpose. The definition, the main types, five examples and why people keep playing them.

A rage game is a video game designed to frustrate the player on purpose. The difficulty is the joke and the point: traps you cannot see coming, controls that fight you, or one mistake that undoes ten minutes of progress. You get angry, you laugh, and you press restart.

We make one, so we think about this a lot. Here is a plain definition, the main kinds, five examples and an honest view on what separates a good rage game from a bad one.

The definition

Wikipedia puts it this way: “A rage game is a video game designed to frustrate the player, often characterized by unfair difficulty, unpredictable mechanics or a high reliance on memorization.”

The same article separates rage games from other hard genres, like masocore games, kaizo levels and precision platformers. Those are hard but fair: they test your skill. A rage game is allowed to cheat a little, and it wants you to notice.

In short, a hard game asks “can you do this?”. The other kind asks “did you really think it would be that easy?”.

Three kinds of rage game

Most of them fall into one of three families. Some mix them.

The troll platformer

The level lies. A floor drops, a spike appears where there was none, the exit moves. You die once to learn each trick, then you beat it from memory. Syobon Action (Cat Mario, 2007) is the classic example. Level Devil and our own Level Demon are recent ones.

The game with awkward controls

The world is fair, but your body is not. QWOP (2008) makes you run a race by controlling an athlete’s thighs and calves with four keys. The rage comes from your own clumsy hands.

The climb where a fall costs a lot

One mistake costs a lot of progress. In Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy (2017) you climb a mountain with a hammer, and a slip can send you back to the start. Jump King (2019) works the same way with jumps.

Five examples, from 2007 to today

Game

Year

Kind

Where

Syobon Action

2007

Troll platformer

Windows, freeware

QWOP

2008

Awkward controls

Browser, free

Getting Over It

2017

Climb with big falls

PC, phones, paid

Level Devil

2023

Troll platformer

Browser and phones

Level Demon (ours)

2026

Troll platformer with a daily level

Browser, Android coming

Getting Over It went to over 2.7 million players through the October 2017 Humble Monthly, according to its Wikipedia page. So this is no niche joke. Many people enjoy being annoyed by a game.

The death replay in Level Demon. Every skull is one of your lives in this room.

Is Level Demon a rage game?

Yes, by that definition, and we built it that way. Every level lies. The hero, Short Fuse, is a matchstick whose flame grows with every death in the room.

But we follow one rule that not every game in the genre follows: the first death may feel unfair, the second should not. Traps are scripted, not random. The game runs on a fixed physics tick of 60 steps per second, so the same moves give the same result on every device. Our test bot beats every level before it ships. That makes Level Demon a rage game you can learn, closer to a puzzle once you have seen the trick.

There is also a daily level, the daily demon. It drops every night at 22:00 Paris time and everyone plays the same rooms, so you can compare deaths with friends.

Why people play a rage game

Our take, as people who make one:

The laugh. A good trap is a joke with a punchline, and you are the one who walked into it.

The short loop. A death costs a second. Restart is instant, so “one more try” is always cheap.

The win. Beating a room you died in twenty times feels better than beating an easy one.

The bad kind breaks the second rule.
